Giovanni McGregor concerned by Dulwich Hamlet’s poor form

BY ALEC McQUARRIE

Giovanni McGregor admitted Dulwich Hamlet’s form “has not been good enough” after a disappointing 3-1 home defeat to Chelmsford City on Saturday.

After 20 minutes in front of another sell-out crowd at a blustery Champion Hill, Dara Dada capitalised on some slack defending to tap Chelmsford in front.

But just before the break Danny Mills’ glancing header from a superb Jordan Higgs cross put Hamlet level, somewhat undeservedly.

Then, on the hour mark, poor marking left Danny Imray free to turn a corner home and 15 minutes later a dubious penalty converted by Charlie Sheringham gave Chelmsford a comfortable two-goal cushion.

The result sees Hamlet drop to 10th. Hamlet have won one of their last nine matches – a cause for concern for former Crystal Palace player McGregor.

The central midfielder, 23, said: “Basically the boys lost concentration at crucial moments in the game. I feel like at 1-1 you have to stay in the game.

“We feel our form has not been good enough.”

With experienced midfielder Michael Timlin out since mid-January, Dulwich gave a debut to Adam Leathers, on-loan from Wycombe, and a second appearance for Jamaican international Luca Levee.

“Obviously losing someone like Michael in the midfield is very important,” said McGregor.

“He’s crucial to the midfield but I feel like the players coming in are good enough so somehow we need to adapt and change.”

Hamlet now face three consecutive away trips before promotion hopefuls St Albans City travel to South London on February 19.

“We just need to get points on the road,” said McGregor. “Go there, be defensive minded, be strong and when we get opportunities we just need to score and be ruthless like how we were at the start of the season.

“Thank you to the fans. Hopefully in the future we can go back to putting on good performances.”
