Gus Atkinson makes it a Surrey trio in England squad for Test series against India

Surrey’s Gus Atkinson has been selected by England for their Test series against India in January.

Club-mates Ben Foakes and Ollie Pope are also in the 16-man party.

Atkinson took 20 wickets in five County Championship matches as the South London club retained their crown.

England vice-captain Pope is in the West Indies as part of his country’s white-ball squad and is recovered from the shoulder injury he sustained in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s.

Wicketkeeper Foakes is coming off a big campaign for Surrey in which he scored 716 runs, 55 catches and a stumping.

Surrey announced in September that Atkinson and Foakes had both sign multi-year contracts.

Surrey recently announced that Amar Virdi and Tommy Ealham have signed contracts.

Virdi, 25, came through the club’s academy ranks and debuted in 2017. The off-spinner has taken more than 120 wickets in 51 games for the Oval outfit.

Ealham’s deal is his first professional one with the County Championship title-winners. He is the son of Mark Ealham, who played for Kent, Notts and England.

Ealham made his senior bow last season in the Metro One Day Cup.

Surrey’s director of cricket Alec Stewart said: “Tommy has made good progress over the last few years.

“I am pleased Amar has signed a new contract as I hope he can challenge for first-team selection through consistent performances.”
