Ice-hockey: Streatham extend their lead at top of NIHL Division 1 South

BY DAVID CARR

Streatham extended their lead at the top of the NIHL Division 1 South division to eight points with another convincing victory over second placed Invicta Dynamos.

Michael Farn’s side notched up a 7-2 win on Sunday night to follow up on the Britton Cup final win over the same opposition a week earlier.

A brace each from Danny Ingoldbsy and Ben Paynter – plus lone goals from Vanya Antonov, Ryan Watt and Sam Waller – secured the two points in front of another healthy home crowd.
Streatham have lost just one of their 17 league matches and have three matches in hand on Dynamos.

“It was a mental as well as a physical challenge for the team to overcome,” said Farn. “We normally have two games every weekend so by Sunday we’re in a rhythm. This time it was our only game so we looked a bit rusty.

“It probably also had something to do with coming back to league action after winning the Britton Cup in front of a packed house last weekend.

“It was a tough adjustment and Invicta really came out flying.

“Before the third we had a talk in the locker room- we scored two quick goals and put the game to bed.”

Streatham’s next game will be at home tomorrow against Chelmsford Chieftains and they remain the only team to have beaten the RedHawks this season.

“They’ve been our toughest opponents this year,” said Farn.

“The games have been close but on home ice we have an advantage of course.”

Streatham follow up their home game with a road trip to Invicta in the London Cup. Victory in Kent would mean they are uncatchable in the round robin tournament and lift their second trophy of the season.
