‘It baffles me’ – Oxford boss Karl Robinson had one major grumble after win over Charlton

Oxford United manager Karl Robinson slammed referee Thomas Bramall for his “embarrassing” decision to award Charlton Athletic a penalty in Saturday’s League One fixture.

Ryan Williams and Cameron Brannagan but the U’s 2-0 up before Conor Washington halved the deficit from the spot.

Robinson said: “We dominated most parts, we passed it well and created chance after chance.

“I know how agressive they were to recruit Jayden Stockley and I can see why. He’s the biggest handful we will play against all season. For us that was a real difficult challenge. He’s top drawer, isn’t he? I know when Stevie Gallen got him, I knew he was over the moon with that one. There’s a few clubs that were disappointed. But there the ones you look for.

“To have five players in our backline not available today meant we were always going to be susceptible to a lack of height.

“Before the game our main reason was, let’s control the football and let’s get bodies in the box and we did that. I thought in all aspects of the game we were excellent.

“It’s great to see fans back even when they’re giving you stick, it’s brilliant, it’s part of our our tradition. We have fans that care for their football club so much. But that’s a fantastic win.

“We struggled early on because the way they play, they have one focal point but their two wide players play as almost second and third strikers.

“We got caught early on with our right-back going to compete with our centre-back which left Conor Washington free coming in off the lines, which was a worry to me. But the players sorted it out and we saw it out and the game should’ve been out of sight in the second-half.

“[Talking about Charlton’s penalty] Have you seen it? It baffles me. We’ve conceded two goals in the league season and both have been penalties. Last week’s one against Cambridge was a penalty. That was an embarrassing decision – it gave them a lifeline.”
