‘It’s the greatest honour of my career’ – George Dobson on award of Charlton Athletic captaincy

George Dobson reckons that being awarded the Charlton Athletic captaincy is the ‘greatest honour’ of his career so far.

The midfielder was given the armband by new manager Dean Holden – who decided that former skipper Jayden Stockley didn’t need the added distraction that comes with being captain during a difficult personal season.

“It’s the greatest honour that I’ve had in my career so far,” said the new Addicks captain.

“When the gaffer asked me to do it, I was really privileged and delighted to do it. As I’ve always done for the club so far, I’ll give everything in every performance. That shows when I’m out on the pitch. I’ll continue to do that.”

Dobson, 25, played a big part in his first win as captain on New Year’s Day as the Addicks triumphed 3-1 at Portsmouth – a performance that was in stark contrast to the defeat at Oxford United three days previous.

“To a man, we were outstanding,” added the former West Ham United trainee.

“After the game the other day, which was such a disappointment, to come to a full Fratton Park and put in a performance like that was something the whole club needed. We’ve just got to make sure we now build on it.

“It’s a great performance and a great result but if you don’t start doing it consistently, it doesn’t matter. We’re going to stay grounded and make sure this becomes more of a regular thing.

“A lot of players have been used over the last three games. The gaffer has just come in and he’s been trying to implement his ideas. He hasn’t had a lot of time to do it. It’s been tough for everyone changing manager. You’re getting used to the ideas. We set out our game plan and executed it perfectly.

“We did what Oxford did to us the other night. A brilliant performance. I’m proud of all the boys. The support was excellent and really spurred us on. It’s been a tough period for everyone at the club and the supporters could have easily not stuck with us. As a club we’re thankful for that and we’re delighted to send them home happy.”
