Johnnie Jackson says Alex Gilbey’s red card was naive as Addicks are beaten at home by Lincoln City

Charlton boss Johnnie Jackson says Alex Gilbey showed some naivety as he was sent off for two yellow cards during the 2-1 home defeat against Lincoln City.
The Addicks midfielder, who has since apologised for his “stupid” foul on social media, was already on a booking when he was penalised again in the 37th minute for a tug on an Imps man moments after the visitors had edged ahead through Morgan Whittaker.
Referee Bobby Madley evened things up 13 minutes into the second-half when goal scorer Whittaker was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Ben Purrington.
The South Londoners went on to spurn several chances to get back into the game before Anthony Scully doubled the visitors’ lead 14 minutes from time.
Jayden Stockley gave Charlton hope as he headed home his 17th of the campaign on 88 minutes but Lincoln held on for their first ever win at The Valley to end Charlton’s three-game winning run.

“It’s a bit naïve from Gilbs, there,” said Jackson when asked about the first-half sending off.
“He got booked for pulling the guy back for the first one and it was almost identical. You’re hoping you might get away with it and the ref might show a little bit of leniency but he’s been consistent.
“You can’t really argue with the decision. Gilbs will be disappointed with himself there, he needs to be a bit cuter in that moment.
“I don’t really know how we’ve lost [the game], to be honest. We created enough chances to at least have got a draw from the game, probably more. But defeat it is. Disappointed with the two goals and disappointed that we haven’t taken the chances we created. A game decided in both boxes and we’ve come out the wrong side of it.
“We got away with [missing chances during the win at Doncaster] last week, this week we haven’t. It’s something we need to address and work on, and we are. The positive is that we’re creating those chances. It will come together, there will be a day where we score a hatful. But it’s not happening, we score the odd one. For the amount we’re creating and how we’re moving the ball, getting into situations box to box, the payoff needs to be more. We need to score more goals.”
Charlton have long been out of the promotion race but that was made official today as it became mathematically impossible for the Addicks to make the top six – with a 21 point deficit to make up and only 18 left to play for.
Jackson agreed that the fact this point has come with six games of the campaign still to play shows how much work there will need to be during the summer.
He said: “It’s been a disappointing season, there’s no getting away from it. We’re at the wrong end of things. We want to be in that shake up and it hasn’t gone that way this year. We know how and where we need to improve. We’ve got a real strong nucleus of players that are with us next year. If we can add the right types, we know we are behind and there’s some catching up to do. But with the right recruitment strategy and getting the right people in the building I think we can bridge that gap.”
