Lee Bowyer says that Charlton Athletic were unable to match the financial terms on offer from FC Famalicao for Ruben Lameiras.
The Addicks felt confident they would land the 24-year-old midfielder.
But Lameiras settled his future earlier this week as he signed a four-year deal with the newly-promoted Portuguese side.
“From what I hear he got offered a lot more money than what we offered him,” said Bowyer. “I can half understand why he went there because he is a Portuguese lad.
“The player has gone for more money and the Portuguese league isn’t a bad league, you have got some good sides in that.
“We were close and I think if we’d offered more money from the beginning then we might have been able to sign him, but because we were so low they looked at other options – which then opened door to other things.”
