Baton Awards celebrate the achievements of women of colour
Unseen and unheard for so long, women of colour have most definitely found their voices, and are passing the baton on.
The Baton Awards continues to go from strength to strength, highlighting the achievements of women from diverse backgrounds.
This year’s awards were held at the British Medical Association in Tavistock Square, Camden.
With strong evidence that women of colour are often overlooked in terms of recognition and promotion within their chosen fields, this award event gives a firm nod to those enacting change.
Nominations were received from all over the UK, in 13 categories, including Entrepreneur of the Year, Third Sector of the Year, Thought Leader of the Year and STEM trailblazer.
A 14th award was given by South London-based founder of the Baton Awards, Dr Diahanne Rhiney. She said the event acknowledged the incredible work of previously unseen women.
The event was hosted by journalist and TV presenter Brenda Emmanus and entrepreneur Courtney Daniella Boateng.
A committed women’s sport advocate, Shivani Laddha won Sportswoman of the Year for her contribution to women’s sport.
The STEM Trailblazer award was picked up by Dr Abigail Otchere co-founder of SiSTEM, a non-profit organisation aimed at supporting women and girls on their STEM journey.
Councillor Asher Craig, deputy mayor and cabinet member for children, education and equalities at Bristol City Council. won the Political Figure award.
The deputy mayor told her story, one “steeped in community activism, fuelled by systemic racial injustice”. She referred to herself as an “accidental politician”.
A Lifetime Recognition Award was given to comedian and actor Angie Le Mar.
