The Southbank Centre marks 25 years of Refugee Week
An artist has collaborated with a group of young asylum seekers to create a bold and joyful artwork, and it is about to go on display.
To mark 25 years of Refugee Week, The Southbank Centre is working with Counterpoints Arts to celebrate the one thing that connects us, compassion.
The Southbank Centre will be hosting music, talks, work-shops, film screenings and new artworks from June 8 until July 6.
Artist Murugiah, known for his surreal and joyful style, will be exhibiting his most recent commission, Compassion.
The piece will be on display at the Riverside Entrance Foyer to The Southbank Centre.
Murugiah, who was born in England and raised in Wales with Sri Lankan heritage, has developed this work in collaboration with a group of asylum seekers from Compass Collective.
The piece is inspired by the artwork of young pupils across the UK featuring messages of welcome for refugees and those seeking asylum around the world.
The Southbank Centre’s Refugee Week will also include short film screenings with the Arab Film Club, music and dance workshops and commissions from poets like Vanessa Kisuule who has been featured on BBC iPlayer, Radio 1, and Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour and has over 10 poetry titles to her name.
