Food & Drink: Get it delivered by Paloma Lacy
So we’re finally in partial lockdown and the Government is clear in its message that we shouldn’t go out unless it’s absolutely necessary. All restaurants were ordered to close their doors to in-dining customers last weekend, but let’s not forget that many are still operating, reverting to, or in some cases offering a new delivery service to support those in self-isolation and partial lockdown.
It’s important that we support them in return.
We took for granted the range and variety of food available to us before this crisis, and if we want to ensure that choice is there, once life returns to normal, we’d better support our South London restaurants through this difficult time.
Let’s face it, online shopping deliveries are pretty hit and miss at the moment, with so many orders missing items so why not to treat ourselves to the odd takeaway delivery?
Here’s how a few local restaurants are helping keep up spirits and fill tummies through these dark days:
Following the success of Good Neighbour Camberwell, a new Tooting High Street restaurant opened just a month ago. Founder Paul Williamson (ex Soho House Group) brought his love of artisan wines, cocktails and small plates, serving a delicious range of exciting vegan, vegetarian, fish and meat dishes.
He quickly decided that if diners couldn’t come into the restaurant, he’d bring food to them.
Deliveries are available from one of the big-name firms and there’s a comforting number of dishes to see anyone through such solitary times. Perhaps hot artichoke and Parmesan dip with sourdough or crispy bites of spiced pork belly or tofu, with baby gem and pickles for starters?
Cheese and charcuterie – £4 per dish or three for £10.50 – includes Cornish Yarg and Bleu des Basques, as well as Coppa and Bresaola.
Around three to four small plates to share between two is the suggestion and our top picks – fried halloumi bites with lemon and honey, wild mushroom and arancini, and prawn croquettes with black garlic and tarragon aioli.
All are priced around £6.
