Food & Drink: Tasty Treats

BY PALOMA LACY

We might have to stay home for a while longer but all the more reason to be well fed and watered while there.

Summer is well on the way and one word will cover all catering needs – barbecue. And even for those without a garden, a riddle pan will do the trick. Unsurprisingly, a butcher remains the best place for meat well matured and packed with flavour.

Added to the fact that supermarket visits continue to be fraught with queues, let someone else take the strain and have meat delivered to your door. Family butcher, HG Walter, is famed for supplying London’s many Michelin-starred kitchens but also delivers to the man on the street.

Basic BBQ Box

Its Basic BBQ Box for four is far from basic, and is more like most people’s idea of luxury. Meats are vacuum packed so you can eat some and freeze the rest. It includes bavette steak, pork chops, burgers, chicken thighs, sausages, HG Walter house BBQ rub and Stokes Sweet & Sticky BBQ sauce.

This little lot will set you back £65 but will easily stretch to six meals for a small family – parents and a small child – and let’s not forget about provenance. All meats are matured for maximum flavour and beef is hung for at least 28 days, up to 90 days.

The World’s first European online rum festival takes place on Saturday, May 23, from 4pm till 10pm.

Each ticket includes 15 drams from at least seven unique brands sent directly to your home and access to one of two curated ‘festival rooms,’ the Spiced, Fruit & Flavoured Rum room or the Craft Rum room.

Rum Festival

In each session, presenters from brands such as Plantation Rum, Don Q, Montanya, Rhum Damoiseau and Ron Artesano will be joining for allocated time slots to speak about their rums and hold a Q & A segment for attendees.

The first room is the ‘Spiced, Fruit & Flavoured Rum’ room. If you like your rum with added spices or flavourings this is the room for you.

You’ll be well catered for to sample a wide variety of the best that this category can offer.

The second room is the ‘Craft Rum’ room. If you usually like to sample rum on its own, or appreciate the complexity of neat spirits, this is your room. A variety of distillation methods, base products, and islands are just some of the differences that will be on display.

Last but by no means least, the ‘Chill-Out’ room, where you can relax between talks and meet fellow rum fans from across Europe.  There’ll be distillery owners, rum blenders, ambassadors and other brand representatives in attendance to give you first-hand information about the rums you have with you to sample, and then to answer any questions you may have!

Tickets can be purchased from DesignMyNight from £45.
