Michelin-star chef Cumberbatch is at your Herne Hill service

By Paloma Lacy

Notting Hill Carnival may be cancelled this year but one man is single-handedly bringing Carnival vibe to Herne Hill this bank holiday weekend, with his kitchen takeover at popular neighbourhood restaurant, Park’s Edge Bar & Kitchen.

Previously named Best Caribbean Chef In The UK, not once but twice, Anthony Cumberbatch’s Michelin-starred training has seen him cook for a number of A-list celebrities but in a few weeks’ time, he could be cooking for you.

Expect a delicious menu, rum, cocktails and the sounds of the Caribbean, paying homage to a Carnival Dreams set menu.

He said: “Not having Carnival is like missing Christmas for me. It’s a time for people to let go and enjoy themselves, with great food and drink.”

People might not be doing that in West London this year but they will be in South London. Mr Cumberbatch, 52, wants to buck the trend he sees for “flat Caribbean cuisine,” showcasing the fine dining potential he believes is very much missing in London today.

He certainly has the requisite cooking credentials and splits his time between the kitchen at private events and restaurant consultation. Dulwich-born and Barbados-raised, his CV reads like the stuff of kitchen dreams, cooking under the likes of Anton Edelmann and Anthony Worral-Thompson, creating a head chef with more than 28 years’ experience.

His Carnival menu at Park’s Edge Bar & Kitchen is a breath of fresh air. Soursop granita kicks off proceedings, followed by sharing starters and main course plates, both designed to be palate-pleasing and thought-provoking.

Enjoy starters of black eyed pea fritter and okra balls, tequila and beet wild salmon and jerk chicken wings on plantain hash.

Main courses include escovitch fish with pickled baby veg and pressed jerk pork with apple and scotch bonnet jam.

If you’ve always wanted to taste curry goat Michelin-style, this will be your chance. All served with coconut rice and peas, a generous dauphinoise potato wedge and pineapple-soaked plantain.

Park’s Edge Bar & Kitchen is at 49-51 Norwood Road, Herne Hill, SE24 9AA. Call 020 8671 0306.
