Streatham Food Festival

BY PALOMA LACY

News that an extended Streatham Food Festival is back for 2021 will no doubt be music to locals’ ears and a sign of life returning to normal.

The 10-day event begins on July 1, giving everyone plenty of opportunity to get back out and support bars, cafes and restaurants.

Organiser In Streatham hopes it will bring the buzz back to Streatham High Road, after 18 months of lockdowns and so many turning away from the high street.

Streatham’s food culture is diverse and broadening continually.

Some fantastic eateries with wonderful food and drink are part of the Streatham Food Festival

The Streatham Food Tour has 40 eateries taking part this year. Food tourists can expect longstanding favourites such as Hood Streatham, Talay Thai, El Chicos and Slurp as well as relative newcomers such as BeWyld, Dilpasand and Nar Turkish Kitchen.

On Saturday, July 3, a small market opens, with face painting for children and a new outdoor seating area on Streatham Green, top of Mitcham Lane launches, providing an al fresco dining spot to sit back and enjoy traders’ offers.

Restaurants involved in the event look forward to offering their customers additional seating there. Brickwood, Dilpasand and Lo Pasta Tradizionale are just some of these.

The Streatham Food Tour is being billed as a Streatham Taste Staycation, with participating restaurants offering taster dishes priced between £4 and £7.

Grab a scorecard at any of the venues and rate and mark off your visits.

Collect at least three stamps and send the completed card by email to: streathamfoodfestival@gmail.com to be in with a chance of winning £100 to spend at your favourite Streatham dining spot.

Last year’s scaled back event saw virtual food demonstrations at its heart and London Smoke & Cure, Streatham’s award-winning smokery, SW16 Bar & Kitchen and BeWyld, are among those showcasing delicious dishes to cook at home.

Oli Osibo, InStreatham BID chairman, said: “Following what has been a tough year for many of Streatham’s businesses, we are looking forward to highlighting everything and everyone that makes our high street so special and giving people the perfect excuse to get back out and savour the fantastic food we have on offer.”
