Tasty treats for dad this Father’s Day
BY PALOMA LACY
Father’s Day is on Sunday, June 20, and there are so many present ideas fit for the foodie dad.
Here are some of our favourites. They’re calling this summer the one we’ve all been waiting for, with people desperate to get back to normal life after lockdown.
It’s also a bumper year for football-mad dads – with the chance to celebrate (hopefully) UEFA Euros 2020 and Father’s Day, all in the same month.
South London dads are spoilt for choice when it comes to where to watch the matches but safe to say it’ll be a chance for pubs to finally bounce back.
Dial Arch in Woolwich is at the top of our list – games are televised on big screens and the kitchen is poised to transport families to burger heaven, with plenty of other match-fit dishes. www.dialarch.com
Fancy treating dad to modern fusion Japanese food? Give Sugoi JPN a try.
Multi-award winning Sugoi JPN, combines sushi and tacos to bring us the NoriTaco; a crispy seaweed tempura shell filled with Japanese-Latin fusion fillings and sushi rice.
Sugoi JPN uses leading suppliers to high end, big name restaurants in London, enabling them to offer a taste of luxury at an affordable price.
My favourites included Señor Crab and Japanese Fried Chicken Karaage.
The street food favourite was awarded best takeaway chef in Britain 2019.
Under One Kitchen is home to Sugoi JPN, Arepita Sliders and Japanified, among other food brands.
The initiative was set up by Felipe Preece to help hospitality businesses survive during the pandemic.
The project allows start-ups to established businesses to work alongside each other under one kitchen to cut down on costs while their restaurants were closed, thus enabling them to continue operating as a delivery and takeaway service during lockdown.
A year later, Under One Kitchen now manages 23 operations across seven London kitchens, including South Wimbledon, Chelsea and Stockwell.
Inspired by Japan’s food capital, Osaka, the talented team of chefs at Japanified have taken popular international urban dishes, flavours, cultures and traditions, and given them the Japanese touch.
The menu features sliders (including the favourite wagyu with chimichurri), sides (such as Takoyaki – fried octopus – ultimate Osaka street food, and hugely popular, Blue Corn Taco FIY Kits.
It comes with eight tortillas and freshly prepared Japanese fillings, including tuna and salmon sashimi and kimchee sauce, glazed chicken karaage and vegan beef with tonkatsu sauce and kuromame beans.
Tracklements’ Father’s Day Bundle will go down well, hand delivered to dad at the family barbecue in honour of the big occasion.
The preserve expert has brought together five of its best-loved products and popped them into a handy hamper – £18.20.
It includes; British Beer Mustard, 140g – made with a malty Wiltshire beer. It does wonders for hunks of ham, pork pies or flinty Cheddar, Particularly British Piccalilli, 270g – a curious mustard pickle packing a rather sharp punch and moreish crunch.
It’s beautiful piled onto a Ploughman’s and alongside meaty terrines as well as Scotch eggs , Spitfire Chilli Mustard, 140g – a volcanic condiment for courageous taste buds, it fires up cold meats, cheeses and sausages, Perfect Ploughman’s Pickle, 295g.
This has everything you want in a pickle – a toothsome crunch, a sweet tang and a sharp bite.
There’s no better partner for a ploughman’s, or a thick-cut ham sandwich, fresh Chilli Jam, 250g.
The sticky-sweet chilli jam smoulders with a gentle heat from fistfuls of fresh red chillies.
Incredibly versatile, it’s beautiful with fish, meats, on sarnies and with creamy cheeses. www.tracklements.co.uk/
