The Apollo Arms, Clapham… offering something a little different

Clapham Old Town has been a pub hotspot for generations, with many standing the test of time.

Given the state of the industry, I expected at least one of the big three to have disappeared, but it isn’t so.

The Sun, Rose & Crown and Prince of Wales all appear to be thriving.

There’s a new pub/restaurant in town, The Apollo Arms, and its offering is something a little different.

A nice choice of bars within it give a good drinks offering, but it’s more about the food here.

The menu befits a restaurant that takes food seriously, totally elevating pub grub and reflecting a country pub in town.

Highlighting British produce, the lunch set menu is available from noon until 4pm.

For those imbibing, an aperitif seems a civilised way to begin.

My friend stuck to water, but we were intrigued by the Bloody Good Bloodies section, six different kinds of Bloody Mary, including one for six to share – Bloody Susan.

Burata with sauce vierge, basil, chives and crispy shallots was a huge hit, as was gazpacho.

Scallop, crab and basil ravioli with lobster bisque and leek fondue is surely a popular dish and keenly priced at £14.50.

Tuna sashimi with whipped avocado, pickled ginger and truffled ponzu dressing caught my eye as an ideal choice, packing a punch on the flavour front.

Pub classics are available for those in want of a burger or fish & chips, but there are far more interesting dishes on the menu.

Chicken schnitzel with creamed potato, sauce Diane, tobacco onions and fried duck egg is one such example.

Confit duck leg penang with jasmine rice, kaffir lime, Thai basil and cucumber salad is another.

Focaccia is baked several times a day so prepare to be lured into bread heaven during starters and mains.

The general offering most suits an over 30s crowd to my mind, but perhaps the locals are more of a sophisticated bunch.

The main bar is cosy and offered welcome respite from the rain during my visit.

On a fine day, the pretty walled garden is quite clearly the place to be.

There’s even a bar attached, with a good amount of gin, cocktail and beer options to sample.

This area can also be hired for private parties.
