42,000 blood donors needed as London blood stock drops

NHS Blood and Transplant has partnered with Transport for London (TfL) to call on people across the capital to become a ‘LonDonor’ by registering to give blood and save three lives in just one hour.

It comes as the NHS is urgently appealing for people to make an appointment to donate at donor centres in London because blood stock levels have dropped.

Blood is used to treat patients with cancer, blood disorders and those suffering medical trauma or undergoing surgery.

NHS Blood and Transplant has revealed that 42,000 new blood donors in London are needed this year to keep supplying blood for life-saving treatments.

This means more than 400 new donors per day are needed in London based on current trends in demand, with a particular need to recruit more black African, black Caribbean and younger donors.

If six per cent of Central line commuters registered and donated blood just once, the 42,000 donor target would be reached and 126,000 lives could be saved or improved.

The Central line has the most donor centres along the route of any Tube line.
