Calls to make January Tamil Heritage Month
The Liberal Democrats sent a letter to the Mayor of Southwark on Monday requesting that he mark Tamil Heritage Month in the borough for future years.
The letter, sent by Southwark Liberal Democrat group leader Councillor Hamish McCallum, referred to the London Assembly’s Tamil Heritage Month motion.
The London Assembly unanimously voted to pass the motion in December.
It called on Sadiq Khan and the city’s boroughs to declare January, Tamil Heritage Month.
January is important for the Tamil calendar due to the commencement of their Harvest Festival in the middle of the month.
Cllr Eliza Mann, Southwark Liberal Democrat said: “I am extremely proud of the hard-working, friendly and caring Tamil community that I am part of.
“Many made their homes in Southwark.
As a past mayor of Southwark, it would be an honour to see the borough I served declare its support of Tamil people by marking January as a heritage month.”
