Don’t damage Peckham’s diverse neighbourhood

I have lived in Peckham for 12 years and I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the proposed developments of the Aylesham Centre by Tiger Developments.

I took part in the online consultation in August 2020 and found it incredibly lacking and one-sided.

Unlike many other South-east London areas, Peckham has managed to avoid the unsympathetic changes that ruin the character of the neighbourhood.

Peckham maintains a light and open feel that keeps it balanced between busy a London suburb, and a welcoming family-friendly neighbourhood.

A tower block taller than any of the current buildings would not be in keeping with the local area and would block light and sky, and it would change the character of the neighbourhood.

The plans are also not in keeping with the architecture of the local area.

There are many very old buildings in Peckham town centre, from Georgian to art deco, some of which have fortunately been preserved from development to the detriment of their historical significance.

A recent example is 104 Peckham High Street, a Georgian building saved from unsympathetic development that would have ruined the character of the the building and the high street.

I love Peckham. It has been my home for 12 years and I have no intention of ever leaving it.

I am not against developments to increase housing, help businesses, and make better use of areas. But any plans need to be well thought out and not damage the character of our beautiful, energetic and diverse neighbourhood
