South London artist documents life in the pandemic through new book
A charity worker has published a book of drawings that document her life and the news throughout the pandemic.
East Dulwich-based artist Jolie Goodman started creating a drawing a day on December 13, 2019 – when Boris Johnson was elected Prime Minister.
Some of the digital artworks made since March have been collected into a book called The Covid Drawings 2020.
The drawings vary in range, some covering big political events such as Dominic Cummings’s press conference in the rose garden at 10 Downing Street or the US election.
But some depict more personal moments in Goodman’s life, like a walk in the park or a rare haircut.
Ms Goodman said: “The artwork I make tends to be in series. Over the last few years, I have been making political cartoons. This has been a way to process a lot of changes, which did not feel to me to be for the better.
“I thought I would make a daily drawing to observe and bear witness to what lay ahead and 2020 has proved to be the most challenging of years. I have been told that the drawings do make people laugh.
“Using humour has been an essential way for me to get through this year which has been so difficult and tragic.”
