Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney re-enacted for the London stage

For one night only, London theatre-goers will have the opportunity to see the famous wag-off trial re-enacted for the stage this autumn, writes Molly Pavord.

Lisa Spirling’s verbatim play has been adapted from seven days of the High Court’s transcripts by writer Liv Hennessy, and promises to show the intricacies of the dispute behind closed doors and through the words of both Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy.

Ms Spirling said: “This trial asks key questions about the complex boundaries between privacy and celebrity in modern Britain and what it is to be a so-called ‘WAG’.
“I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Eleanor, Eilene and Liv to bring this extraordinary court room script to life.”

The real-life saga started when Coleen Rooney, wife to Wayne Rooney, initiated an investigation to find out who was leaking stories of her private life to The Sun.

Following her revelation that Ms Vardy was the source in question, Ms Rooney publicly shamed Ms Vardy on Instagram.

In a bid to restore her tarnished reputation, Ms Vardy, wife to Leicester City player Jamie Vardy, took Ms Rooney to court to sue her for libel.

But Ms Rooney’s claims were found to be substantially true, while Ms Vardy’s evidence was seen as unreliable.

Producer Eleanor Lloyd has a strong track record in delivering cutting edge inquiry dramas to London’s theatres, including Agatha Christie’s Witness to the Prosecution, which has recently celebrated its fifth year at a specially-created Theatre in London’s County Hall.

Ms Lloyd said: “The way the trial gripped the nation – myself included – demonstrated to me straight away how well this story would translate to the stage; the twists and turns of the case were so intriguing you couldn’t write it.”

Keep your eyes peeled for more details as the date and venue are set to be announced soon.
