Review: Come From Away showing at the Phoenix Theatre by Paloma Lacy

A musical about 9/11 may not strike a chord as the cheeriest of shows but Come From Away manages to showcase the very best traits found in human nature, combined with a cracking score to create a foot stomping romp, writes Paloma Lacy.

It’s easy to see why this multi-award winning show is back in London’s West End, playing at the Phoenix Theatre and booking until February.

Particularly relevant given that this year marks the 20th anniversary of this global tragedy, it tells the story of 7,000 stranded air passengers in the wake of 9/11, landed in Gander, Newfoundland.

Unable to be reunited with their luggage for security reasons, the passengers survive for five days on the kindness and generosity of a these small town folk, whose population is doubled overnight by the newcomers.

Sports stadiums converted to house the temporary residents and supermarket shelves cleared to give people what they need and all at no cost.

The people of Gander wouldn’t take a dime. This is community pulling together at the very highest level.

The show begins with culture clashes and misunderstandings but this quickly changes to trust and camaraderie, creating gratitude and lifelong friendships.

Naturally, there’s also a love story depicted between two people from different countries.

Come From Away centres on an 18-strong chorus that works the stage together for the entirety of this 100-minute performance, with no interval.

It’s exhausting just watching.

For me, the standout performances go to the female lead, Diane, a pilot in charge of one of the aircraft.

Played by Kate Graham, who has a phenomenal voice and presence to carry so many of the songs, delivering them with heart and soul.

I spent much of the performance with goosebumps. The award for comic timing goes to Jenna Boyd, for her portrayal of town leading light, Beulah.

Thank you for bringing levity to scenes that could otherwise stray into darker territory.

Brilliantly strong songs, relentless dancing carries the audience with it from start to finish. This smash hit show continues to shine and will no doubt soon add yet more awards to its high profile collection.
