Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet playing at the Southwark Playhouse

Lazarus Theatre Company will be bringing Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet to the Southwark Playhouse from Thursday, January 12 to February 4.

Leading the cast will be 26 year old Michael Hawkey as Hamlet, alongside Lexine Lee as Ophelia; both of whom will be making their professional debuts.

Mr Hawkey said: “Our Hamlet is as much a pragmatist as he is a philosopher. He is a doer, tasked with doing the unthinkable.

“To make your professional debut is one thing. To make it at 26 after a career change is another – and for that debut role to be Hamlet, I think it’s fair to say that this means an awful lot to me.”

Hamlet tells a timeless story of madness, vengeance and tragedy.

Lazarus Theatre Company promises to inject this popular tale with a gutsy and enticing interpretation, offering an all-new experience of Shakespeare.

Artistic director of Lazarus Theatre Company, Ricky Dukes, said: “It’s tremendous to have assembled such a talented, gifted, energetic, focused and up for it company of young performers ready to take on this iconic play.”

The production is presented in association with Southwark Playhouse Shakespeare Schools project, which offers over 1,000 free tickets to Southwark schools.
