The Albany appoints new associates to create with the community

A performing arts centre in Deptford has appointed three new associate artists who will create art with and for the community.

The three artists chosen by The Albany are Ryan Calais Cameron, Angela Clerkin and arts collective Initiative.dkf, run by artistic director DK Fashola and creative producer Wofai.

The artists will work with people local to the venue over the next twelve months, creating art that responds directly to the community’s needs, interests and tastes.

The arts centre is committed to handing power directly over to audiences and democratising the way the organisation is run.

Actor, writer and theatre maker, Angela Clerkin said: “Being an Artist of Change at The Albany in 2021 is my dream job.

“As a theatre maker and activist I believe it is up to us to imagine the world we would like to live in and work together to make it happen.”

Gavin Barlow, chief executive and artistic director of The Albany, said: “With the world changing so rapidly, now feels like the right time to try out new ways of working and let artists and our communities tell us what they want from us and what matters to them.”
