A superb and energetic French Bistro – Café Rouge restaurant in Dulwich

Friday evenings definitely deserve a visit to Café Rouge in Dulwich, a small to medium sized, but perfectly formed, quiet French Bistro Restaurant that gets more energetic as the night goes on.

The A La Carte Menu seems to always have ‘offers’ available, for example 40% off mains, or buy one main and get the second for £1. Most recently 25% off, including starters. mains, desserts and drinks. So, well worth having a quick look around online for current offers before your visit.

Drinks were ordered upon seating – A Sauvignon Blanc, Cote Lavande, a classic French medium white wine and a Malbec, also a Cote Lavande, full bodied, juicy blackberry flavours with a touch of liquorice.

Bottles vary between £15- £30, and a large glass averages £7. The vast majority of wines served are French, however, Spanish and Italian wines are available.

For starters – Crevettes – large king prawns in garlic & smoked chilli butter with a small sliced baguette for £7.50, accompanied with a bowl of lemon water for a finger-washing dip as the prawns still have some shell intact.

For the Mains – Black Angus 7oz fillet steaks, (aged for 35 days) cooked perfectly medium rare with fantastic flavour, taste and texture, one served with frites, the other, a house salad. Both £22.95 each. Sauces – Béarnaise, Roquefort, beef dripping Merlot gravy or peppercorn £2.25 each.

Finally, Desserts – A Cafe Gourmand – a selection of three classic French mini-desserts: crème brûlée, mousse au chocolat and tarte au citron served with a latte (changed from an espresso). Also, a classic Sorbet – two scoops of lemon or mango. All quite small portions as described, but refreshingly light and moreish. Desserts average around £7 each.

All the staff are very polite, friendly and attentive without being overly obtrusive, so definitely deserve tipping. Perhaps a little louder background music wouldn’t go a miss, as the tables/seating arrangement is a little close, but not uncomfortable and well worth a return visit to explore the new menu.
