‘Age is no barrier when it comes to gumption’: Lewisham recruiting for Older Persons Olympics
Lewisham’s leisure centres have put out an urgent request for people aged sixty-and-over to represent the borough the ‘Older Person’s Olympics’ this autumn.
The ‘Club Games’ – described as the ‘Older persons’ Olympics’ – take place in central London each year with teams from Better Leisure centres all over the UK competing.
Featured sports include badminton, bowls, table tennis, short tennis, walking football, dominoes and swimming.
Lewisham has put on a sterling performance at previous tournaments but is looking for talented sportsmen and women to sign up for this year’s event.
To join in, you don’t need to be a top-class sports person, all that’s required is a willingness to have a go, work with your teammates and enjoy yourself.
This year, the Games will be hosted by TV star and presenter, Christopher Biggins.
Mr Biggins said: “I’m thrilled to be the Ambassador for this year’s Better Club Games.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for older people to show that age is no barrier when it comes to gumption, team spirit and having fun.
“I can’t wait to meet all the competitors and maybe even try my hand at a spot of ping pong!”
Leisure centres in Lewisham are run by GLL under the Better brand.
