BFI London Film Festival celebrates it’s 67th year with a host of free events
This year marks the 67th BFI London Film Festival (LFF) and there are a host of exciting free events on offer.
There are family activities, talks with household names as well as new talent, multidisciplinary short film screenings, augmented reality walks and film-inspired music nights.
Most of LFF For Free will take place at BFI Southbank over the two weekends of the film festival – October 7 & 8 and 14 & 15.
From anime legends and children’s classics, to queer representation, activism and the subcultures of cult cinema, this year’s free festival Talks include a special conversation between Sir Michael Morpurgo and Frank Cottrell Boyce, the writer of Kensuke’s Kingdom and screenwriter of its film adaptation.
At The Ghibliotheque Guide to Hayao Miyazaki, there will be a guided tour through the work of the Studio Ghibli co-founder and legendary animation director Hayao Miyazaki.
This will be run alongside the festival’s screening of The Boy and the Heron, the first film in a decade from Mr Miyazaki.
African-American poet and activist, Nikki Giovanni, will join the directors of the new documentary Going To Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project, to reflect on her life and legacy.
And if that is not enough, Chasing Identity: Queerness and Empowering Ourselves Through Film will be a discussion with the director of Chasing Chasing Amy, Sav Rodgers, reflecting on the 1997 cult hit film and the act of reclaiming queer representation on screen.
There will also be the chance for audiences to get behind the scenes with Lights, Camera, Action! Who’s Who On Set.
Across 10 drop-in lunchtime talks, audiences will hear from behind-the-camera creatives to find out more about the directors, stunt co-ordinators, production design and makeup artists who work to create the magic behind the screens.
With psychedelic immersive experiences and DJ nights, there is a lot going on in this year’s LFF For Free.
