Deptford Northern Soul Club emerges as the new face of Northern Soul
Deptford Northern Soul Club (DNSC) are childhood friends Will Foot and Lewis Henderson, whose early love of soul developed after discovering Mr Henderson’s father’s record collection.
After bringing their musical heritage to the forefront with their debut DJ set at Deptford’s Bunker Club seven years ago, they have since taken their popular club night around the UK, performing at the likes of Glastonbury, Green Man and End of the Road.
As part of their regular residencies, DNSC will be at EartH in Stoke Newington Road, Dalston, on November 24 and Moth Club in Valette Street, Hackney Central, on December 15.
DNSC have emerged as the new face of Northern Soul, bringing the movement back into the conversation of modern dance music.
Northern Soul was originally a dance movement that emerged in the late 1970s in Northern England and the Midlands.
It developed from the British mod scene and was based on black American soul music with a heavy beat and fast tempo.
But DNSC’s nights are not what you would expect from a typical Northern Soul night – allowing people to forge their own experience with the genre.
Mr Foot and Mr Henderson said: “We have never been interested in nostalgia – we love soul music because it’s brilliant.
“We think it resonates with young people today as it has a timeless universal message – what really matters resides in relationships, not material things.”
