Get All the Tea in 2024

From tea tastings to guided language tours of a free tea exhibition and late openings, this line-up of special events will show you everything you need to know about Britain’s national drink.

Tea is a free exhibition currently showing at the Horniman Museum and Gardens in London Road, Dulwich. The exhibition’s programme of events explores the many stories of Britain’s national drink, spanning millennia and connecting communities across the world.

The popularisation and spread of tea is connected to stories of imperialism and colonial violence, but it has also inspired artistic expression, cultural customs and national identities.

The tea plant is indigenous to a stretch of land that, today, covers South West China,

Northern Burma and North East India. It has been cultivated successfully in tropical and subtropical regions across the world.

After you’ve had a browse of the exhibition, several tea plants are on show in planters opposite the Horniman Conservatory.

If you want to try out the real thing yourself, the Horniman is also offering free drop-in tea-tasting sessions on February 11.

Join Mei Leaf –  Tea Curators and Educators – in the Horniman Conservatory for a casual tea tasting of ancient tree teas, brewed in the Gong Fu brewing style.

Mei Leaf releases weekly educational tea videos on its YouTube channel and has a Teahouse dedicated to Gong Fu Cha in Camden Town.

The program includes even more, offering free family craft Saturday drop-in sessions where anyone – above the age of three – can learn traditional Chinese calligraphy.

Try out everything tea-related the Horniman has to offer this year. Open daily, the exhibition will run until July 2024.
