Go Bananas this Bank Holiday

The second bank holiday weekend of the month is almost upon us and there are dozens of exciting things to do in and around South London to keep you and all the family entertained.

Séance at The London Dungeon runs from May 26 until June 3 and promises to be one of the attraction’s scariest shows yet. Step back to the 1870s with psychic Agnes Guppy, known for her levitations and transportations during séances, as she attempts to contact the afterlife in this spine-tingling experience, asking, ‘Is anybody there?’.

One of the most interesting photography exhibitions of the year, The Great British Seaside at National Maritime Museum, Greenwich will continue its run, celebrating the nation’s love affair with the seaside. Featuring more than 100 works by four of Britain’s most celebrated photographers – Martin Parr, Tony Ray-Jones, David Hurn and Simon Roberts – The Great British Seaside: Photography from the 1960s to the present, explores our changing relationship with the seaside over the past six decades.

For the more musical reader, Peckham’s Jam on the Rye on May 28, in association with Kerb, presents a one-day celebration of sound system culture and the best of London street food. Expect a mix of reggae, afrobeat and new wave jazz across three stages. The main stage will be presented by Reggae Roast and headlined by David Rodigan, Horace Andy (Live) and Mungo’s HiFi; the second stage will be hosted by South London promoters Wormfood and the third will play host to Kerb’s second Kerb Talks, a panel discussion on London’s sounds system culture.

Feria De Londres brings the vitality of a traditional Andalucian Feria to Bernie Spain Gardens on the South Bank with a vibrant celebration of Spanish culture and cuisine. Inspired by southern Spain’s annual spring fairs, the festival will feature Flamenco dancing shows, interactive workshops and live Spanish music, as well as an array of family-friendly activities.

The London Saxophone Festival will take place at various locations across the capital from May 21-27. This is a celebration of all things sax, taking place at a range of venues across the capital. This week-long series of events will involve performances from world-class musicians, workshops, film and exhibitions. The festival will feature some boundary breaking players at the very top of their game.

Finally, just across the river the Early Man Family Fun Day, Museum of London is heading back to the Stone Age on Bank Holiday Monday, with free screenings of Aardman’s latest film, Early Man, plus a range of drop-in family-friendly activities. Journey back to the dawn of time, when prehistoric creatures roamed the earth and courageous caveman hero, Dug (voiced by Eddie Redmayne) and tribe unite against the mighty Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston) and his Bronze Age City to save their home. Film screenings take place at 11am and 2pm. Kids can also learn the art of flint-making using soap, hold real prehistoric artefacts, and much more in drop-in activities.

Whatever you choose to do there will be something for everyone in South London across the late May bank holiday.
