Hearing Things at The Omnibus Theatre, Clapham Common
Nicholas is a psychiatrist battling with the demands of his work. His father is showing early signs of dementia and he is finding it hard to cope.
When an incident occurs involving one of Nicholas’ patients his life is turned upside down.
Hearing Things explores the dilemmas of psychiatry from the points of view of patients, relatives and staff. Based on experiences of psychiatrists and patients, the ‘healthy’ and the ‘ill’, looking at how and if people heal and recover inside institutions.
Three performers, Jeanette Rourke as Hope, Janet and Grace, Daniel Ward as Innocent and Patrick, and Jim Pope as Nicholas weave in and out of a number of different characters with precision and grace.
Writer Philip Osment’s episodic structure allows the natural parallels in the different stories to bubble to the surface, offering an opportunity for the audience to be engulfed and challenged by the narrative.
