Latin Elephant celebrates a decade of community action

The migrant community that’s breathed life into a celebrated but struggling part of South London is celebrating 10 years of the charity at the heart of its campaign.

The not-for-profit, Latin Elephant, will host a full day of community-led activities on September 21, from 11am to 9pm at Draper Hall in Hampton Street.

The jam packed schedule includes an Elephant Walking Tour, tasty bites from independent food traders, a Latin American market, a Re-Walking the Elephant workshop with designer and researcher Luise Vormittag, Bingo, panel talks and dancing.

There will also be a screening of the Bafta-nominated The Palace by Jo Prichard.

The Palace is an emotional portrait of a reluctant goodbye to The London Palace Bingo Club which was housed within Elephant and Castles shopping centre – told through the stories of the regulars that loved and depended on it, and the owner who couldn’t save it.

This milestone event marks a decade of community organising, collaboration, campaigning and resisting a non inclusive ‘regeneration’ in Elephant and Castle, an area home to a community of independent, migrant-led businesses.

The event also marks four years since the closure of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, and times are especially tough for relocated and displaced traders.

The celebration provides an opportunity to generate solidarity by reconnecting, reflecting and re-energising the community.
