London’s biggest celebration of disco returns to Brixton

London’s biggest celebration of Disco will return to Brixton this May, spread across six iconic venues.

Brixton Disco Festival (BDF) on May 4, will see live music, DJs, screenings, talks as well as food and drink flow from venues surrounding Brixton’s iconic Windrush Square including Electric Brixton, Brixton Jamm, The Ritzy Picturehouse and The Black Cultural Archives.

Located in the heart of South London, the event celebrates more than 40 years of Disco.

Acts already confirmed for this year’s lineup include House and Disco DJ Dave Lee JN, vocalist and artist Jocelyn Brown and Norman Jay MBE.

Elsewhere on the line-up, DJ Yasmin – known for dancing between genres and formats – will be playing everything from lover’s rock to boogie, jackin’ house to soul followed closely with a set by DJ and singer Ella Knight.

But BDF offers much more than music. The Ritzy Cinema will be screening the Talking Heads‘ classic concert film Stop Making Sense.

A remastered version of the 1984 movie hit cinema’s on January 27, to coincide with its 40th anniversary.

The film captures a live performance from the band, shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater in December of 1983.

Stop Making Sense stars core band members David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison along with Bernie Worrell, Alex Weir, Steve Scales, Lynn Mabry and Edna Holt.

For the second year running, BDF has announced its partnership with the Black Cultural Archives which will see a community stage in their courtyard in Windrush Square for both established and emerging local talent from the black community.
