School of Muralism brings colour and creativity to the forgotten parts of Lewisham

A campaign has begun to raise funds to create the Lewisham School of Muralism.

The school plans to be a structure to teach and support young artists and activists to transform London with colour and new voices.

The project is supported by Goldsmiths, University of London and Lewisham Council – it will teach students and local residents the process of creating public art in Lewisham.

The campaign is aiming to raise around £65,000 and so far nearly £30,000 has been pledged.

The School of Muralism will bring colour and creativity to parts of Lewisham that are currently overlooked.

Students from all disciplines at Goldsmiths will be working alongside young local artists, together they will work with local residents to respond creatively to the challenges of urban living.

Supported by Brewers, Network Rail and Goldsmiths, the school will run three courses of 10 weeks each, over a period of 18 months, to bring more colour to the streets of Lewisham.

Each course will have 12 students and each group will produce two murals as part of their professional development, increasing their skills and contributing to the local community.

Patricio Forrester, founder of Artmongers who are involved in the campaign, said: “Now is the perfect time to bring together years of experience painting murals in Lewisham combined with newly energised young people who have become more engaged in activism.”

“The School of Muralism would be a great asset to the community and learning infrastructure in the local area,” said Professor Frances Corner OBE, Warden, Goldsmiths University of London.
