The ‘Affordable Art Fair’ returns to Battersea Park

Army II by Delphine Lebourgeois. Giclée on Hahnemuhle. Photo Rag paper, 101.5 x 74.5cm, edition of 20. £800 from Gas Gallery

The popular fair makes a return with a celebration of artistic innovation and female talent.

The Affordable Art Fair returns to Battersea Park this March 8-11 with a diverse line-up of contemporary works from artists and up-and-coming talent alongside household names, showcasing a mix of paintings, editioned prints, sculptures and photography, all priced between £100 and £6,000 – so no matter your taste or budget, everyone can find a piece to fall in love with this Spring.

This season’s edition will see the return of the fair’s Platform Projects initiative, showcasing innovative installations by emerging and established artists exploring tensions around consumerism and waste and the relationship between art and science, including a former Cirque du Soleil performer and a computer scientist. The fair will also shine a spotlight on some of its most exciting female talent,
including new work by Delphine Lebourgeois in a dedicated display celebrating International Women’s Day (8 March), curated by new Fair Director Lucinda Costello.

Don’t Miss Art’s Next Big Thing: Platform Projects

The fair’s Platform Projects initiative will return to Battersea with brand new interactive works for guests to explore.

Rising star Neus Torres Tamarit will reveal her new immersive work Biomorpha on the fair’s opening night. Reflecting the instinctive way humans adapt to sudden changes to survive, guests will be invited into a room where the floor mutates and shifts in reaction to their movements. Working at the intersection between art and science, the work has been created in partnership with computer scientist Ben Murray.

Meanwhile, Hermione Allsopp’s Bedlam transforms functional bedroom furniture into dysfunctional sculptures and, by repurposing discarded domestic items charged with memories and meanings, her work tackles issues of consumerism and waste.

Husband and wife duo Davy and Kristin McGuire will also be debuting a new collection of film noir-inspired video vignettes. Davy, a theatre professional, and Kristin, a former Cirque du Soleil performer, combine their experience and love for theatrics to create mesmerising scenes with a unique dark humour.

Following on from their debut at the Affordable Art Fair Bristol 2017, as part of the UWE Recent Graduates’ Exhibition, exciting new talent Laura Collins and Alice Vaughan will be showcasing their work on a London stage for the first time.

Fair Highlights:

In honour of International Women’s Day, the fair will celebrate the female talent amongst its artists with a specially curated exhibition of works featuring Delphine Lebourgeois (Gas Gallery), whose bright ‘Army’ series champions female creativity and the recognition of women’s skills.

Lebourgeois’ playful style and recognisable characters from childhood stories make the struggle for gender equality accessible and relatable to all. Her works celebrate and reinforce the importance of female unity and humour in tackling sexism.

The exhibition will also host work by British artist and designer Morag Myerscough (Outline Editions), known for her distinct bold and vibrant style, who has previously worked on projects for London’s Design Museum and the Barbican Centre.

Elsewhere, TAG Fine Arts will be showing works from in-demand artists such as Ewan David Eason, whose work hangs on the walls of Fidelity Investments, and Robin Duttson, whose prints form part of an editioned series originally commissioned to fill the prestigious ONE the Elephant development in Elephant and Castle.

Guests of all ages are also invited to get hands-on with Artichoke Printmakers on Saturday and Sunday, who will be on hand with expert advice and additional inspiration to help visitors create their own original dry point masterpieces in the drop-in Print Studio.

Rock Around The Clock by Morag Myerscough. Archival print, 50 x 70cm, edition of 100. £180 (unframed) from Outline Editions.

Also on Saturday, visitors can attend a talk with figurative sculptor Scott Pohlschmidt on artist materials, and learn how to grind pigments to make their very own oil paint.
