The Blue Elephant Theatre sweeps the board claiming five out of nine awards
The Blue Elephant Theatre swept the awards board at the ‘Offies’, claiming five out of a possible nine awards at a ceremony in the newly reopened Grand Hall of Battersea Arts Centre.
The Camberwell theatre was a favourite at the Off West End awards where a people’s vote was used to determine the results for awards such as ‘Most Welcoming Venue’ and ‘Best Programming Policy’.
Co-Artistic Directors Niamh de Valera and Jo Sadler-Lovett were at the ceremony to collect the Blue Elephant’s accolades and said: “We are touched and delighted to receive these awards.
There’s an incredible team of staff, volunteers, artists and participants who make Blue Elephant the place it is.
We are always striving to improve and offer more and it is so rewarding to have that recognised in this way.”
The ‘Offies’ were created to celebrate the best productions outside the West End and those who create them, often on very small budgets and many other commitments.
Blue Elephant Theatre won the People’s Vote Awards in the ‘Offies’ in the following categories: Most Welcoming Venue, Programming Policy, Best Programmes, Most Comfortable, Online Info & Booking.
The 50-seat fringe theatre is a registered charity and specifically aims to offer creative opportunities to those who may not otherwise be able to access them, through providing free participation opportunities, working with local schools and supporting emerging artists.
Brian Beaton, from Camberwell, whose daughter attends the Young People’s Theatre, said: “We feel so lucky to have this outstanding theatre and learning resource in our community.
If every borough had at least one theatre like Blue Elephant, London would be a much better place to live.”
The programming policy at the theatre focuses on helping new artists to create and present new work with recent new initiatives including the launch of residencies, the Elephantology Festival for recent graduates showcasing work created in training and the commission of The Wolf Inside Me by Blue Elephant Theatre’s Youth Board.
