Theatre: To Kill A Mockingbird, London’s Gielgud Theatre
One of the most famous novels in history has been turned into a stage production with a big name in the lead role.
Rhys Ifans, the Welsh actor who has starred in many Hollywood films, will play the iconic role of Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird.
The new play by Aaron Sorkin – who has written the scripts for productions such as The Social Network and The West Wing – is based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel will open in London’s West End next year.
Set in Alabama in 1934, To Kill a Mockingbird centres on one of the most venerated characters in American literature, the small-town lawyer Atticus Finch.
The cast of characters includes Atticus’s daughter Scout, her brother Jem, their housekeeper and caretaker Calpurnia, their visiting friend Dill, a mysterious neighbour the reclusive Arthur “Boo” Radley, and the other residents of Maycomb, Alabama.
Harper Lee’s enduring story of racial injustice and childhood innocence has sold more than 45 million copies worldwide.
It will preview at London’s Gielgud Theatre from May 21, 2020 with an opening night on June 11, 2020.
Tickets go on general sale from 10am today.
To Kill a Mockingbird is set to reopen in the Gielgud Theatre in May 2021.
After a terribly difficult past 12 months for the the theatre industry, let’s hope all goes well fort the production to go ahead in May.
