Man dies at Tooting Bec Tube station after being struck by train

A man has today died after being hit by a train at a tube station. At around 12.30pm, the British Transport Police (BTP) were called to Tooting Bec Station following reports that a man had been struck by a train.

Paramedics also rushed to the scene from nearby St George’s Hospital, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The BTP said the incident is not being treated as suspicious, and the file will be prepared for the coroner.

His next of kin will also be informed.

Sam Lamiri, 25, of Beechcroft Road, Tooting, who owns a harissa business, was walking by whilst the emergency services were parked outside the station.

He said: “There was an insane amount of vehicles parked outside the station.

“I’m talking 15 police vehicles, including unmarked cars, vans, and lorries, I didn’t even know police lorries existed!

“I also saw about four fire engines and around seven ambulances.

“It looked like absolute chaos, I just hope everyone involved is alright!”

But Mr Lamiri was also concerned with the large crowds that were gathering at the scene.

“I get that when something like this happens. It’s human instinct almost to go and have a good look.

“But come on, we’re in the midst of a pandemic that’s spiralling out of control, and large crowds like the ones gathered outside the station are going to spread Covid like a wildfire.”
