Millwall agree loan deal for Werder Bremen’s Oliver Burke

Millwall have agreed a loan deal to re-sign Oliver Burke, subject to the Werder Bremen attacker passing a medical.

The South London Press understands that the Lions have two medicals scheduled for today as they look to make additions to their squad before tomorrow’s 11pm deadline.

Burke spent the second half of last season on loan with Millwall and had been one of their transfer options in the summer.

But the former Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United player opted to join Werder Bremen on a free transfer in July.

The 25-year-old has scored twice in 15 Bundesliga appearances.

Bremen tweeted today that they have agreed to let Burke make a temporary loan move, subject to him successfully completing a medical.

Werder Bremen technical director Clemens Fritz said in December that the Scotland international could deliver more.

Fritz said: “With Oliver, it’s a case that with all the attributes he has, he has more in the tank than he is showing. And I have told him that too.

“He needs to show his abilities better and more frequently otherwise he will find it hard to beat off the competition for a starting slot.”

But Burke impressed playing for the Lions in the second half of the previous campaign. His pace and power make him an option in both a wide attacking role but also through the middle.

He scored two goals in 14 outings for Gary Rowett’s side, with a hamstring injury ruling him out of seven Championship matches.

Burke returned to net against Barnsley and Birmingham, also picking up an assist at Luton Town.

If he completes his move then Burke would be available for Saturday’s home game against Sunderland.
