Millwall boss explains why no more centre-back additions before transfer window deadline

Gary Rowett has explained why Millwall have not looked to bring in a defender before the closure of the summer transfer window.

The Lions have wrapped up their expected business with the loan arrivals of Ryan Longman and Allan Campbell from Hull City and Luton Town respectively.

Some of the club’s fanbase had expected a centre-back arrival. But Rowett told the South London Press: “We have got Ryan Leonard, Shaun Hutchinson, Jake Cooper, Wes Harding and Murray Wallace – so five centre-backs at the club.

“If we play a back three we have got two spare. If we play a back four we have got three spare – to me that’s more than enough.

“Every club can try and improve in an area, but you have to try and maximise your  budget to get the best out of the group. What you can’t do is have extra players just to have them. We have to run quite close with what we’ve got. Certainly that was not a priority area for us.”
