Millwall defender makes AFC Wimbledon move

AFC Wimbledon are set to sign Alex Pearce on a free transfer.

The defender, who will be Johnnie Jackson’s first signing as Wimbledon manager, is free to leave Millwall at the end of this month after his contract was not extended.

Pearce would go on to make more than 80 appearances during his three years at the Den and was club captain under Gary Rowett.

The 33-year-old former Reading and Derby centre-back only played six times in the Championship last season.

The Dons were in need of a centre-back after it was announced that Ben Heneghan and Darius Charles would both be leaving the club at the end of the season – the latter retiring from football.

Pearce has recorded more than 300 senior appearances in club football and nine international caps for the Republic of Ireland during his career.

The signing will be seen as a major coup for the Dons, with Pearce’s experience and leadership qualities set to be vital for a team which had the youngest squad across the top four divisions in English football last season.
