Nathan Gorman looks to blow away Daniel Dubois…not his birthday candles

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Nathan Gorman turned 23 on Tuesday but is putting birthday celebrations on hold until after his July 13 showdown with Daniel Dubois.

Unbeaten Greenwich heavyweight Dubois has the chance to win the vacant British title on home turf at the 02 Arena next month.

But Gorman says he is making sacrifices to ensure he is in top condition for an intriguing clash of two unbeaten big men.

“It’s just a normal training day so I am hardly in the mood to eat cake and have a fun day,” he said. “I won’t see my family because I am staying away from home to be near the gym, but it will be worth it when I beat Daniel.

“I was given the cake at the wrong time and if I did try to eat it I don’t think my trainer Ricky Hatton would’ve been pleased.

Dubois claimed recently that Gorman – 16-0 in the pro ranks – fails to entertain fans.
But the Nantwich fighter hit back: “Don’t throw stones from a glass house.

“He knows deeps down that he has to train his hardest and that I am coming to take that belt. He knows it.

“No disrespect to the opponents we have both fought – they are just learning fights and had lost before. I won’t accept defeat like they might.

“When I beat him what is he going to say then? He says I’m not exciting, but I will have beaten him so what will that make me?”

Dubois has shown his heavy hands since turning over from the amateur ranks – with 10 of his 11 bouts ending inside the distance.

Only three of his opponents have lasted past five rounds and he was happy to trade leather with Richard Lartey last time out in April to win the vacant WBO global title.

Dubois does not know why he took a more high-risk approach against the Ghanaian before halting him in the fourth.

“The spirit and energy told me to do that and I went out and did it,” he said. “The only thing I can say about that fight is I got a win.

“One thing I can tell you is he [Gorman) is never going to be exciting to watch.”
