12,000 fireworks ring in new year with biggest-ever display

South London’s skyline was lit up by more than 12,000 fireworks to ring in 2024, with the capital’s biggest-ever display.

More than 100,000 ticket holders gathered together in the Queen’s walk in the South Bank, to watch the celebration that was broadcast to millions across the world.

The show – organised by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan – featured 600 drones and 43 lights alongside the fireworks display beside the London Eye on the South Bank.

The drones interacted with the fireworks forming a countdown ahead of Big Ben chiming midnight, a dandelion’s petals blowing away to represent the need to protect the natural world, and a child blowing bubbles in an image of hope.

The display was accompanied by a soundtrack from across the world, featuring bhangra, k-pop, and reggaeton, as well as British pop classics from the likes of the Spice Girls, Dua Lipa, The Kinks, and many others.

There was a recorded message from His Majesty King Charles II and the event also marked 75 years of the NHS, 75 years since the arrival of Empire Windrush and 10 years since same-sex marriage became legalised.

Mr Khan, said: “Our unique combination of fireworks, drones, lighting and music have put on a fabulous show for the millions watching around the globe, sending a message of unity and showing why London is the greatest city in the world.

“Last year was filled with so many special moments and as we move into 2024 I feel more inspired than ever to continue our work towards building a better, greener and more prosperous city for everyone.”
