Alumni dedicates sculpture to former college’s history and values

A 75-year-old artist unveiled a sculpture honouring her former college’s history and values on Tuesday.

Patsy Hickman unveiled her sculpture Renewal, at Morley College in Westminster Bridge Road, Lambeth.

At the unveiling Ms Hickman said: “People often talk about the 3 “Rs” of education, but at Morley it is the 4 Cs – curiosity, cultural thinking, creativity and courtesy … In my sculpture I want to communicate these qualities.”

The sculpture depicts characters representing each of the disciplines offered at Morley College: music, dance, choir, sculpture, academic disciplines and career opportunities. 

It also represents notable alumni including the former music director Gustav Holst, a respected early twentieth century composer.

The sculpture was selected from a number of works competing to occupy the Fifth Plinth outside of the Waterloo Centre for Adult Education, which features a new sculpture every few years. 

Ms Hickman’s piece was unveiled by renowned sculptor and competition judge Sokari Douglas Camp, who described Renewal as “exciting, rejuvenating, and slick.”

Jack Davy, curator of art at Morley College London said: “Renewal is a truly beautiful sculpture that represents the college’s values and spirit. 

“We are delighted that students, visitors and the passers-by will be able to enjoy this sculpture outside the Waterloo Centre for Adult Education.”

Renewal will be on display for the next three years.
