Army Veteran finds metal in his Tesco loaf

A 75-year-old army veteran insists he never wants to eat bread again after he bit into a piece of metal imbedded in a Tesco loaf.
Victor Rock, who was in the army from 1964-68, bought a loaf of Tesco’s finest wholemeal bread from the superstore in Kennington Lane on Saturday, July 7.
After making himself a cheese sandwich, he bit into it and felt a piece of sharp metal scraping against his teeth and gums.
The Vauxhall resident said: “I was very frightened. I don’t want to eat bread again from nobody. I’ll make it myself or eat crackers.
“You get that fear every time you eat bread. You get that psychological feeling, that something could be wrong.
“I believe there could be more in the loaf. They will have to put a metal detector over it.”
Mr Rock took the loaf to the Tesco store on Saturday, July 14.
The piece of metal he dislodged from his teeth is about 1.5cm long and very stiff.
He claims a Tesco manager asked him to bring back the loaf over fears the whole batch could be contaminated.
He said: “If it goes into your stomach it could do you harm. It’s harder than a brillo pad. It could puncture the intestines.
“What if it was a kid? A mother giving them bread. It’s dangerous. Or someone in an old person’s home.
They don’t know what is in their mouth, then they choke. Then they die.
“I’ve fought through wars and conflict, to come back to Britain and be killed by some wire in my wholemeal bread.”
Mr Rock, who immigrated to the UK in 1962 from Barbados as part of the Windrush Generation, has taken his bread case to the law firm Slaters.
But they said it would cost £1,000 for them to take it up.
He said: “I want Tesco to be more careful. Stop putting people’s lives at risk. They have a duty to the public. This is not free, it’s no food bank. I buy it. I expect it not to do me any harm.”
The father-of-five is looking for compensation and a refund for his loaf of bread.
A spokesman for Tesco said: “All of our loaves of bread go through a metal detector before going on the shelves, so we are very surprised to hear of this incident at our Kennington Superstore.
“We have asked Mr Rock to return his loaf to the store so we can fully investigate.”
