Attempts to go to ground in France fail as would-be murderer is brought to justice

A man has been convicted of attempted murder of a woman after being extradited from France.

Bodrul Alam, 24, of Orde Hall Street, Bloomsbury, was found guilty of attempted murder on May 31 after a trial at the Old Bailey.

The attack happened in her own home and in front of her children, who played a big part in saving her life after she received multiple stab wounds.

Detective Constable Olli Meek said: “Alam left the victim, a woman known to him, with multiple stab injuries in an unprovoked attack.

“It’s only thanks to the speed and skill of the initial attending officers, London Ambulance Service and Air Ambulance paramedics who came to her aid, and the doctors and nurses at hospital, that she is alive today.”

Alam fled to Europe immediately after the incident at an address in Camden on April 29, last year.

Having identified him as a suspect, police worked with international partners to identify his whereabouts. He was arrested near Versailles, France on July 19, and was returned to the UK on August 3.

Investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Julian Bates. said:“It is important to highlight that this attack took place in front of the victim’s children. They were instrumental in saving her life as they courageously called for assistance and provided vital care to their mother in the immediate aftermath until help arrived.

“The victim has a long road ahead following this terrible ordeal, but seeing her attacker put behind bars will, I hope, go some small way to helping her in her recovery. She has shown incredible bravery and resilience and I would like to thank her and her family for their dignity whilst engaging with the court processes.”

Alam will be sentenced at the same court at a later date.
