BBC Weather ‘data glitch’ suggests hurricane winds across London

The BBC has issued an apology after  a “data glitch” on its weather app and website led to “hurricane force winds” being forecast for London.

People searching for weather updates this morning were met with the wildly inaccurate suggestion that wind speeds of 13,664 mph, 13,569 mph and 13,508 mph, would hit Southwark, Lewisham and in Lambeth.

Presenter Matt Taylor said in a post on X: “Don’t be alarmed folks – Hurricane Milton hasn’t made it to us here in the UK ! There’s been a data glitch between our suppliers and the app/online. Folk are working to solve the issue.”

It comes as Florida was devastated with sustained 120mph winds from Hurricane Milton last night.

In a statement, BBC Weather said it was “working hard to fix the issue” and apologised.

In reality, there will be rain and drizzle in London today, BBC said.
