Black Business awards land on plenty of South London’s finest movers and shakers

No fewer than six entrepreneurs and captains of industry from South London have scooped awards for their efforts at this year’s Black Business Awards. 

Among those receiving accolades for outstanding work in their respective fields at the Leonardo Royal Hotel, Tower Bridge, were:  

Arts and Media Senior Leader of the Year: Suzann McLean, chief executive and artistic director, Peckham Theatre 

Consumer and Luxury Rising Star: Prince Chakanyuka, E-commerce customer supply chain manager for toiletries manufacturers P&G 

Consumer and Luxury Senior Leader of the Year: Patrice Gordon, director, commercial strategy development, Virgin Atlantic  

Entrepreneur Rising Star: Troy Johnson, founder of Caribbean takeaway firm Juici Jerk Ltd  

Financial Services Rising Star: Natalie Ojevah, Barclays Eagle Labs diversity and inclusion lead for business start-ups

STEM Rising Star: Ivan Kayima, chief executive of job platform Spiela 

Suzann McLean said: “It’s an honour to receive this recognition. As a creative leader of a charity, it’s not every day that your business prowess is recognised as a valuable skill for success.  

“I proudly receive the Black British Business Award as encouragement to continue the culture at Theatre Peckham where all voices are unapologetically championed, heard and valued.” 

The Black British Business Awards (BBBAwards) is the only one of its kind in the UK. Established in 2014, it has been endorsed by three Prime Ministers, the Mayor of London and global business leaders.

A spokesman for the event said: “The annual Awards ceremony confirms the strength of the Black talent pipeline by highlighting the commercial excellence of Black professionals and entrepreneurs, who stand as role models and substantial contributors to the UK economy.” 

Sophie Chandauka MBE, chairwoman of the BBBAwards said: “This group of BBBAwards finalists is extraordinary because of the pandemic, geo-political and socio-economic circumstances surrounding their accomplishments.  

“We celebrate this breathtaking group of professionals and entrepreneurs who are competing on the global stage, representing the very best Britain has to offer.

“They remind us of the importance of self-belief despite the odds; the merit of striving for excellence and the requirement of perseverance.”
