Police carried out a controlled explosion in East Croydon after a suspicious package was discovered on Friday.

Cops and bomb disposal experts were called to Addiscombe Road, near East Croydon railway station, just after 4pm.

The incident caused chaos for commuters after all trains through East Croydon were stopped and the station and surrounding area was cordoned off while specialists examined the package.

A spokesman for the Met said: “Police were made aware of a suspicious package in Addiscombe Road, Croydon. Members of the public were evacuated and safety cordons were put in place while specialist officers assessed the item.”

A controlled explosion was carried out “as a precaution” and the all-clear was given at around 6pm.
