Bonfire spreads out of control setting 20ft containers and three cars on fire
Firefighters are warning residents to take care with bonfires after a fire at a storage yard last night.
A vehicle and about four tonnes of mixed refuse were completely destroyed by the blaze in Manor Road, Erith.
Two 20ft containers and another two vehicles were also damaged in the fire.
Firefighters took 13 calls about the incident at around 7.10pm. The fire was under control by 9pm.
Four fire engines and about 25 firefighters from Erith, Bexley and Plumstead fire stations attended the scene.
The fire is believed to have been caused by unattended burning spreading out of control, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.
A spokesman for the LFB said: “We would urge people to consider if their bonfire is necessary and to take care if you’re burning waste at home or at work.
“If you’re having a bonfire never leave it unattended and consider your neighbours if you do decide to have a fire in your garden.
“Make sure you build it clear of buildings, garden sheds, fences and hedges and never use flammable liquids to start it or burn dangerous items such as aerosol cans.
“Always keep a bucket of water or a hosepipe nearby in case of fire.
“Always check your local authority’s advice on bonfires and follow our safety tips.”
