By Kiro Evans, Local Democracy Reporter

A cannabis factory in Greenwich was discovered and shut down by police after reports of a fire.

Officers from the Met Police found a number of cannabis plants and nine catfish at the site in Plumstead.

The animals have now been placed with the RSPCA and no arrests have been made.

Officers made the discovery after reports of a fire on Saturday on Plumstead High Street at around 11.30am. They were called by the London Fire Brigade after they dealt with the blaze.

No arrests have yet been made and the Met Police says enquiries are ongoing.

The incident occured on Plumstead High Street, which the local council has been trying to revamp.

Along with the high street, Lakedale Road and White Hart Lane have been earmarked for improvements in a £5.2m scheme funded by the council and the mayor of London.

Various shop fronts have been replaced and improved as part of the scheme.

The revamp is also supposed to deliver upgrades to streets, roads and lighting, the creation of greener public spaces, and public artworks that will add character and celebrate Plumstead‘s rich history.

Speaking in November, Greenwich council leader Councillor Danny Thorpe said: “We are delighted that the first phase of this regeneration scheme has commenced on site.

“A second and third phase are soon to follow, and we anticipate over thirty shops will be transformed by spring 2022.

“The council are proud to play a major role in rejuvenating such an historic area of the borough.

“The improvements are designed to bring life and activity to Plumstead and reflect its diversity and vibrant community.”
